Colorado Mountain College’s “Ice Block” might be the best guiding bargain in the World. Where else can you get ten days of Ice Climbing instruction with an IFMGA/UIAGM guide, transportation, high end crampon and ice tool rentals,  as well as lodging and food while traveling to Lake City and Vail. Did I mention that you earn College Credit for this?

In most places this would cost you a near fortune, but CMC’s Outdoor Program offers this at an extremely low cost.

The prices above are the Per Credit cost of a program with the College. Ice block is a 4-credit program which has an additional fee of  $250.00. This brings your MAXIMUM cost to $1,274.00 for 10 days of instruction.

This year, the course is split into one Thursday-Sunday session and two Friday-Sunday sessions. The latter two weekends will be spent on site in Lake City, CO and Vail, CO with overnight accommodations included for both venues. The Schedule below is this year’s itinerary.

The curriculum focuses on some fundamentals of anchor building and ice site management as well as all the ice climbing movement skills you can pack into ten full days on the ice. I can honestly say that teaching Ice Block the past two winters has really made me a much more technique oriented ice climber. This season, Kip Davis and I will be incorporating many of the skills presented in the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course curriculum onto the ice!
