Yesterday, Jayson Simons-Jones owner of Crested Butte Mountain Guides and I headed west from town and managed to find some truly excellent skiing. Perfect low density snow atop of either a crust of a surprisingly supportive mid-pack. This season is shaping up to be exciting; Basal facets, some crusts, some buried Surface hoar all the ingredients for a classic Rockies winter! If all this jargon has you confused check out my avalanche course offerings this season in Crested Butte and Leadville Colorado.

Speaking of avalanche stuff, I’ve been geeking out hard on shovelling strategies and their importance in rescue. Remember ‘the beacon gets you close, the probe locates the victim and the shovel digs them out’. An avalanche rescue cannot be performed without all three important elements!

Here is a great article from Manual Genswein about the ‘Snow Conveyer Shovelling Method.

Now get out there and practice your strategic shovelling!
